Mixture and Engine Management + Flight Planning for Shelter Cove Fly-In
This safety meeting is designed for student pilots and licensed pilots preparing for our upcoming club fly-in to Shelter Cove (0Q5). The session will be divided into two key topics: mixture and engine management for small aircraft, and flight planning considerations for a safe and enjoyable trip to Shelter Cove.
Part 1: Mixture and Engine Management
Managing your engine properly is critical for safe and efficient flight. We’ll review practical techniques for adjusting the fuel/air mixture during climb, cruise, and descent, and how to use engine instruments (EGT, CHT) to fine-tune performance. We’ll also cover fuel efficiency strategies, how to avoid common mistakes like over-leaning, and how proper engine management extends the life of your aircraft.
Topics Include:
- When and how to lean mixture
- Engine temperature monitoring (EGT, CHT)
- Power settings and fuel economy
- Avoiding detonation and engine stress
- Real-world leaning techniques for different altitudes
Part 2: Flight Planning for the Shelter Cove Fly-In
Shelter Cove is a beautiful but challenging coastal airport with unique considerations. We’ll walk through a detailed VFR flight plan to Shelter Cove, discussing route selection, terrain and weather awareness, fuel planning, and alternative airports. Special attention will be given to coastal wind patterns, density altitude, and approach procedures into 0Q5’s narrow and sloped runway.
Topics Include:
- Route planning and airspace awareness
- Terrain and obstacle considerations
- Fuel stops and alternates
- Weather briefing and coastal flying tips
- Arrival/departure procedures at Shelter Cove (0Q5)
This meeting is a great opportunity to brush up on essential skills and prepare for a safe, scenic adventure with fellow club members.
