After being postponed multiple times due to weather, the long-anticipated overnight fly-in to Kern Valley is finally cleared for takeoff! Join the High Sierra Pilots Club for a relaxed weekend of flying, camping, and connecting with fellow aviators in one of California’s most scenic backcountry airports.
Kern Valley Airport (L05) sits right along the Kern River and offers a perfect setting for an overnight adventure. With wide-open skies, gorgeous mountain views, and a welcoming friendly vibe, this is a classic fly-in destination that’s worth the wait.
What’s in store:
- Under-wing tent camping – Sleep under the stars beside your aircraft. http://www.kernvalleyairport.com/airport-camping.html
- Group dinner – Casual meal at the Kern Valley Airport Café or a local favorite nearby. http://www.kernvalleyairport.com/airpark-cafe.html
- Evening hangout – Campfire (conditions permitting), stories, s’mores, and good company.
- Morning departure – Optional group fly-out or linger and explore the area.
Not into camping? No problem.
There are several small lodges, motels, and vacation rentals nearby in Kernville and Lake Isabella for those who prefer a soft bed and hot shower. We recommend booking early, as local accommodations can fill up quickly—especially on weekends. Let us know if you’re staying off-airport so we can help coordinate ground transportation and meet-up times.
